About Me

My photo
As many of you already know, Zach fell off his skateboard on Saturday Sept. 6th. As a result of the fall, Zach suffered a traumatic, closed head injury and is listed in critical condition in the ICU at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Zach is currently under sedation and being kept in a paralytic state to help keep his intra cranial pressure as low as possible, which will help decrease the swelling in his brain. He has been placed in a RotoProne bed, which will help his lungs combat pneumonia which recently set in. Everyone is hopeful and optimistic regarding Zach’s long-term prognosis. The Monday after the accident, Zach was able to move his legs, arms, toes and even squeezed his mother’s hand on command. He has a long journey to recovery ahead of him, but he has his youth, great caretakers and a large group of friends and loved ones rooting for him. His family will be keeping this blog in an attempt to keep all of Zach’s friends and loved ones up to date on his condition. Please check back often as we will try to provide daily updates. You may also post your own comments and please know that Zach will read them soon.

Day 26 and 27

Lets start by updating you from yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. Zach was brought down for a routine CT of the head and lungs. When he arrived back I was in his room by his bed and noticed that his eye was slightly open. I asked the nurse if this was a voluntary or involuntary movement. The nurse said that while down at his CT scan they turned him on his side and his eyes opened up. WOW!
Fast forward to last night's 9:00p visit. The nurse performed neuro checks on Zach and said in a loud voice "Zach Open Your Eyes", to which he responded by opening his eyes. Mom cried. Mom then asked for Zach to squeeze her had, which Zach responded by moving his thumb over her hand!

Today (Thursday) at the 8:00a visit Zach was taken briefly off of the Morphine and Ativan so that they could preform more neuro checks. Once again Zach opened his eyes and kept trying to keep them open.
At the 3:00p visit Zach appeared to be back on his medicine and not easily aroused. As we were about to leave without seeing any responses, I said "Goodbye Zach, we will see you at 9". Just then his eyes opened and then closed. Mom kissed him on the hand and they opened again!

So off we go again to the 9:00p visit. Never know what to expect. Zach will be forced to watch the Vice-Presidential Debate tonight in his room.
Thanks to everyone who has sent thoughtful messages. We are saving all of these messages for Zach to read.

This was really great to read -- tell Zach to keep choppin' for me if you can. Looking forward to hearing what he has to say about Sarah Palin.
