About Me

My photo
As many of you already know, Zach fell off his skateboard on Saturday Sept. 6th. As a result of the fall, Zach suffered a traumatic, closed head injury and is listed in critical condition in the ICU at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Zach is currently under sedation and being kept in a paralytic state to help keep his intra cranial pressure as low as possible, which will help decrease the swelling in his brain. He has been placed in a RotoProne bed, which will help his lungs combat pneumonia which recently set in. Everyone is hopeful and optimistic regarding Zach’s long-term prognosis. The Monday after the accident, Zach was able to move his legs, arms, toes and even squeezed his mother’s hand on command. He has a long journey to recovery ahead of him, but he has his youth, great caretakers and a large group of friends and loved ones rooting for him. His family will be keeping this blog in an attempt to keep all of Zach’s friends and loved ones up to date on his condition. Please check back often as we will try to provide daily updates. You may also post your own comments and please know that Zach will read them soon.

Day 25 Tuesday

Dearest Friends and Family,

We are so appreciative of all your warm wishes and hopes for Zach. Thanks for writing! Hope to get back to each one of you.

Last night a few friends from elementary and middle school came by to visit. Thanks Joe for bringing Lex and Blaine...this brought back great joyful memories of roller-blade hockey, and hot summers in pools.
So yesterday continued to be an uneventful day for Zach. We like this. He continues to wean off of his meds very very slowly and wean off his respirator...very very slowly. (By the way, minor correction on the last blog. The air leak was around the chest tube and quite amazingly resolved within 24 hours!) As of last night Zach has received 3 units of packed cells (blood), and for you medical folks...blood cultures and spinal tap results negative. He is now on flagyl and responding as his white blood count is coming down...yeh. Zach now has a decent cough reflex and corneal reflex.
He is loosing most of his edema, due to a diuretic....and looks like his old self. So all in all, those who know Zach know he is in his "zone phase"....just laying around....figuring out his next move.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers....."Prayer is the sun of Hope."
Love to All....

One of my favorite quotes says "The sun shines not on us but in us" (John Muir).
Sounds like Zach has one of the sunniest rooms around. I'm so glad there is so much love, strength, support and faith coming from all of you and also to you.
It's so good to read daily about Zach's progress and to read about all the great people surrounding him - in person and in thoughts too ! So many Good Things are directed at him while he's in his zone.
Stay strong Zach.

Zach,
This is Mr. Landroche from Tilton. I just heard that you are "in the zone" now, and we both know that I've read the kinds of ideas that occur to you when you are there. As Mr. DeRigo has often said, our interior lives are dangerous neighborhoods, and whenever we go there, we rarely escape without getting our asses kicked. Stay safe in there, heal and return to your exterior life soon. Say hello to Angela and your mom.

Zach you are in the thoughts and prayers of my family and everyone here at Tilton. Your happy and fun-loving affect will get you through. Any time I think of you this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson comes to mind, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." Best Wishes, I will be checking back often. - Mr. Ruggles

Zach, I can't wait to see you when I get back from Asia. I found pictures of our Junior Year Dance off. We had some baller moves. I miss you a lot. See you in December, ok?

To Joann and Angela--thank you for doing this. I can't explain how good it is to read the blog every day, and to hear how Zach is progressing.

Love to you all from across the world,

John David
