About Me

My photo
As many of you already know, Zach fell off his skateboard on Saturday Sept. 6th. As a result of the fall, Zach suffered a traumatic, closed head injury and is listed in critical condition in the ICU at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Zach is currently under sedation and being kept in a paralytic state to help keep his intra cranial pressure as low as possible, which will help decrease the swelling in his brain. He has been placed in a RotoProne bed, which will help his lungs combat pneumonia which recently set in. Everyone is hopeful and optimistic regarding Zach’s long-term prognosis. The Monday after the accident, Zach was able to move his legs, arms, toes and even squeezed his mother’s hand on command. He has a long journey to recovery ahead of him, but he has his youth, great caretakers and a large group of friends and loved ones rooting for him. His family will be keeping this blog in an attempt to keep all of Zach’s friends and loved ones up to date on his condition. Please check back often as we will try to provide daily updates. You may also post your own comments and please know that Zach will read them soon.

Day 16

Zach continues to remain stable today after a rough day yesterday. Yesterday morning while on his RotoProne bed the oscillator which controls his breathing and helps to better his lungs turned off. Thanks to the quick response time of the nurses and the respiratory staff this problem was corrected immediately. At about 6:30p last night the nurse came in for a consent for another tube in his lung. They felt by doing this it would help to get more of the bacteria out of his lungs.

This morning we walked in to find Zach getting his hair washed by the nurses. This is not the conventional way of water and shampoo but of some kind of spray and water combed through his hair. If he were able to see himself and the way his hair was combed and styled he would be mad. She also shaved his face which was more facial hair than I think he has ever had. At 1:00p we turned on the Panthers game in Zach's room.

All and all today has been good. Mom and I like to say "No news is good news" at this time. When we looked at his chest x-rays today the right lung appeared to be improving, the white blood cells are going down, and the antibiotics are doing their job.
We are optimistic about the positive improvements. Thanks for all of your support and prayers.
