About Me

My photo
As many of you already know, Zach fell off his skateboard on Saturday Sept. 6th. As a result of the fall, Zach suffered a traumatic, closed head injury and is listed in critical condition in the ICU at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Zach is currently under sedation and being kept in a paralytic state to help keep his intra cranial pressure as low as possible, which will help decrease the swelling in his brain. He has been placed in a RotoProne bed, which will help his lungs combat pneumonia which recently set in. Everyone is hopeful and optimistic regarding Zach’s long-term prognosis. The Monday after the accident, Zach was able to move his legs, arms, toes and even squeezed his mother’s hand on command. He has a long journey to recovery ahead of him, but he has his youth, great caretakers and a large group of friends and loved ones rooting for him. His family will be keeping this blog in an attempt to keep all of Zach’s friends and loved ones up to date on his condition. Please check back often as we will try to provide daily updates. You may also post your own comments and please know that Zach will read them soon.

Day 36 Five Weeks Today!

(This is the View From Zach's Room)

What a couple of days! Zach has tired Mom and I out. On Thursday when we left the ICU he was barely moving the right side of his body. Well let me tell you, I believe it was all a ploy up until today. Today Zach was moving all the limbs of his body. So much that this morning they had to restrain the left arm (Odd because he is right handed).

Several of Zach's nurses and a resident from ICU have come to see him since going down to progressive. The word from the new nurses is that Zach is the talk of the hospital. he would want nothing less.

All throughout the morning Mom and I tried to make Zach comfortable by putting pillows under his legs and arms, but how cozy can one be on a bed for 5 weeks? We realized that at about noon that he had pulled his catheter off and at that point mom and I were happy if he was. We (for his sake) even waited to tell the nurse!

Mom and I decided to go down to the cafeteria for lunch and Mom went home to change clothes. (Catheter still out)

When I walked towards the room the nurse stopped me and informed me that while we were away he took the feeding tube out of his nose. This was with the left hand that "suddenly" moved. He's a sneaky one. I open the door and he looks at me. "Are you happy, It's out?" I said to him. He grinned in the "I didn't do anything" look.

You can only laugh when he does that.

So the feeding tube was put back in, cath back on, and BOTH arms were restrained. I hate it but the things that he wants to rip out are critical.

Tonight mom and I went out with Ammie for dinner (Zach's Grandmother) and when we returned Zach was awake and alert. We finished the rest of the UNC game; Zach gave a thumbs up at the end then fell asleep.

On a side note Zach and I try to keep busy while in the hospital. We have played several rounds on thumb war and arm wrestling and after 5 weeks of Zach being in the hospital I wish I could say I let him win but he is STRONG!

Though he is physically doing well his emotions still run wild. Bringing up things from the past and some of his accomplishments aggravate him and make him upset. He is working hard and wants to prove to anyone that he can do it. If I have a cool cloth in my hand to put on his head he will snatch it out and attempt to put it on himself.

He amazes me daily.
