About Me

My photo
As many of you already know, Zach fell off his skateboard on Saturday Sept. 6th. As a result of the fall, Zach suffered a traumatic, closed head injury and is listed in critical condition in the ICU at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Zach is currently under sedation and being kept in a paralytic state to help keep his intra cranial pressure as low as possible, which will help decrease the swelling in his brain. He has been placed in a RotoProne bed, which will help his lungs combat pneumonia which recently set in. Everyone is hopeful and optimistic regarding Zach’s long-term prognosis. The Monday after the accident, Zach was able to move his legs, arms, toes and even squeezed his mother’s hand on command. He has a long journey to recovery ahead of him, but he has his youth, great caretakers and a large group of friends and loved ones rooting for him. His family will be keeping this blog in an attempt to keep all of Zach’s friends and loved ones up to date on his condition. Please check back often as we will try to provide daily updates. You may also post your own comments and please know that Zach will read them soon.

Day 22 & 23 Saturday and Sunday

We are so elated at the tremendous progress in the last 2 days. Zach has been at Carolinas Medical Trauma ICU 3 weeks....

Zach's awesome trauma team...Attendings, Residents, Respiratory Therapists, and last but not least RN's...have worked so hard to create such great outcomes....High 5 to all!!!!!

Today we gloriously celebrated (with a BIG chocolate chip cookie)...Zach's weaning from the ossilator to the conventional respirator. This is huge! When we left at 5pm, Zach was tolerating this with flying colors...ABG's fantastic. The plan is to move slowly. Let the body adapt to the new respirator....then start weaning him off the paralytic....YEH!

"If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? No matter how long and bitter Winter may be Spring always follows. This is the law of the universe, the joyful law of life."

from the bottom of our hearts to yours....

First Ang and Jo thanks for writing. It sucks not being able to come and see Zach but it's great to have the constant updates.

Zach! Awesome to hear you keep kickin ass man! Just keep going dude, slow and steady. I think one of my favorite posts if from a couple of days ago. All the nurses coming to see you on their time off. You've got more charm in a coma than I have on my best day!
